Obesity: How Fat Is Too Fat?

The word is getting out that most Americans are overweight (sometimes referred to as obesity), but a lot of people are still not aware that includes them.
We're not just talking about not looking good in a bathing suit. Even someone who is just "a little round," or "pleasantly plump" is already at higher risk for significant health problems that are costing Americans $130 billion a year. Fully two out of three Americans are obese or overweight today.
So just how fat is too fat? The euphemisms we use nowadays to refer to body weight mostly imply that it's a matter of image or appearance, distracting from the real issue-excess weight is hurting our health. So how do you know when to be concerned? When has body weight gone from a cosmetic issue to one of well-being?
The standard tool for measuring that is the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI calculates height and weight to come up with a score that is indicative of a class of health risk. A score of 18.5 to 25 is typically considered a healthy BMI. Above 25, the level of body fat begins to constitute a health risk, because the excess contributes to problems like elevated blood pressure, elevated blood sugars and high cholesterol, which all lead to serious ailments.

A woman who is 5-foot-4 and 155 pounds has a BMI of 27. That's overweight, and she's already at higher risk for various health problems. But if she also has one or more other risk factors-doctors call them "co-morbidities"-such as hypertension or a family history of diabetes, her physician should strongly recommend that she bring her weight down and be vigilant about keeping it stable at a healthy level.
But that same woman just 15 pounds heavier is clinically obese, and at great risk for a host of major medical problems including heart disease and even cancer. Her risk of ultimately dying from those problems simply skyrockets once she reaches that 30 BMI mark.
Along with BMI, doctors also use the measurement of waist circumference. A waist circumference of more than 35 inches for women or more than 40 inches for men is considered bad news. That's because where our weight is distributed can be as critical as how much we're toting around. Weight deposited abdominally-sometimes referred to as the "apple" body type-has a much greater impact on internal organs and the way our bodies function, so it's much more dangerous than weight carried mainly on the hips and thighs, as with the "pear" body type.

How our weight is distributed is largely a result of our genetics and we don't get a vote in it. But if we end up with a body that carries weight in the torso, we get stuck with fat that is far more likely to cause elevated blood sugars and high cholesterol, that is more likely to impair kidney function, more likely to interfere with our cardiovascular health. So someone with a BMI of only 25 or 26, but with a bigger waist circumference, may be advised to lose some weight anyway, just to help avoid some of those serious health concerns.
And what of those folks who have been overweight for a long time, who are comfortable with their bodies, and so far haven't noticed any ill effects of their excess weight?
It is possible to be fit and fat, and a few people are, but it's very few. Health risks do increase with age, and you may not notice initial signs of trouble developing. But you don't have to wonder. You can find out if you're having any negative health effects because of your weight with a few simple tests conducted by your doctor to tell you if your blood sugars, cholesterol, or insulin levels are outside the healthy range.
And if they are, you know it's time to make some changes for the better, before your body takes a turn for the worse.

Side Bar: What OBESITY means and doesn't mean!
Obesity is a medical term with a finite and specific meaning. It means someone who is 30 pounds or more over their healthy weight. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less. But the term has taken on such a tremendous emotional charge, such a negative connotation, that people naturally resist seeing themselves under the classification of obesity, and as a result, fail to recognize themselves as being among those highly at risk.
Obesity does not mean lazy, sloppy, ugly or gluttonous. It isn't a value judgment; it's is a medical definition. One third of all Americans suffer from obesity. It's a health epidemic with many complex factors that go far beyond the individual. So if you're obese, okay. It doesn't mean you're not a great guy or a wonderful gal or a really super kid. It just means you're overweight enough that your health is in jeopardy. And the good news is, there's help for

Stomach Ache – Home Remedies for Stomach Ache

Pain in the belly (abdomen) can come from conditions affecting a variety of organs. The abdomen is an anatomical area that is bounded by the lower margin of the ribs above, the pelvic bone (pubic ramus) below, and the flanks on each side. Although abdominal pain can arise from the tissues of the abdominal wall that surround the abdominal cavity (i.e., skin and abdominal wall muscles), the term abdominal pain generally is used to describe pain originating from organs within the abdominal cavity (i.e., beneath the skin and muscles).

A stomachache can be all of these or just plain mid-body misery. And the possible causes are equally diverse and mysterious: gallstones, lactose intolerance, ulcers, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, stress, overeating. Or not eating enough. Or eating improperly prepared food in an unhygienic restaurant. (For more details, read about irritable bowel syndrome on page 322.)

Some kids get abdominal pain because they ate too much of something, ate a food that was too spicy or greasy, ate a food they have an allergy to, or ate food that sat around in the fridge for too long and went bad. The pain is the body's way of telling you that your stomach and intestines are having a tough job breaking down or digesting this food. For example, some people have lactose intolerance, which means they have a tough time digesting lactose, a type of sugar found in milk and other dairy foods. Whatever the cause, funky foods can quickly make your tummy feel funky!

Home Remedies for Stomach Ache

Eat an herb which aids digestion, such as ginger (ginger-ale, or ginger snaps), peppermint (gum and candy cane as long as it is real peppermint) or Aloe Vera Juice (an anti-parasitic that tastes terrible but aids digestion). Similar herb teas that help digestion include mint, ginger or chamomile tea.

Take a small piece of ginger and grate it. Thereafter, squeeze out its juice. Apply the juice on the bottom of your belly and massage gently. It is an effective home remedy for stomach ache.

Drink regular tea with freshly squeezed lemon or honey. This will definately help in the relaxation of the stomach. Do not put sugar in the tea if you are drinking it with lemon or honey. This will make the tea useless.

Eat yogurt. It contains bacteria your stomach is lacking during an upset stomach. My microbiology professor and others have said this and I personally tried it and it works.

Loosen your belt. If your stomach is distended from IBS, you can loosen your belt. If you're tightly buttoned and belted up, try switching to comfortable, loose clothing, which can ease the pressure on your aching stomach, says Dr. Borum. (It's obvious only after you think of it.)

Take the charcoal from the fire and mash it up in a small cup(preferably plastic so it don't shatter when mashing up the charcoal)add just enough water to cover the smashed charcoal and drink it. I have seen the military do this before so i know that it will work. It will be pretty hard to get it down because it tastes really bad but you will feel alot better if you get it down guaranteed.Or if you have charcoal tablets just take however many the package says. I promise this will work.

Strain and offer warm or at room temperature (depending on your child’s preference) in 1?2 cup doses as needed.

Hand Tremor – Causes and Symptoms of Hand Tremor

A tremor is an involuntary movement or shaking of any body part (even your head or voice may be involved). It is often most noticeable in your hands. Essential tremor is common in older people. Essential tremor is rarely present when the hands are not being used. It becomes most apparent when the affected person is trying to do something, like reaching for an object or writing. It is not caused by an underlying disease.

Tremors can happen at any age but tend to be more common in older people. You can develop a tremor from fatigue, stress, anxiety, or even rage. However, an ongoing tremor that is not associated with a change in your emotional state may be a sign of an underlying medical condition and should be evaluated. You may learn, as many do, that your tremors are perfectly normal, but eliminating medical reasons for the shaking is important.

Difficulty in making precise finger movements will necessitate enlarged keypads with rests, key-guards or delayed activation. Selection of key operating pressure may be critical to the avoidance of muscular spasm. Both audible and displayed key feedback will be necessary to confirm correct actuation and avoidance of unwanted repeats. Speech-input keying may be desirable, but some conditions giving rise to hand tremor also cause hesitancy in speech.

Causes of Hand tremor

Environmental factors: People with unusual exposure to herbicides and pesticides are more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than are people who don't have this exposure. Researchers haven't yet been able to connect a specific herbicide or pesticide to the disease.

Hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis occurs when the thyroid releases too many of its hormones over a short (acute) or long (chronic) period of time.
Tremors caused by stress, try relaxation techniques like meditation, deep relaxation, or breathing exercises. For tremors of any cause, avoid caffeine and get enough sleep.

Half of the cases are due to gene mutation and transmitted dominantly. There are two main loci: ETM1 and ETM2. The rest are idiopathic. No identifiable and consistent structural abnormality has yet been demonstrated to exist in the nervous system of every person with ET.

Essential tremor is the most common form of abnormal tremor. Although the cause is unknown, new research shows that the part of the brain called the cerebellum does not appear to work correctly in patients with essential tremor. The cerebellum is the part of the brain that coordinates muscle movements.

Symptoms of Hand tremor

Rigid muscles: Muscle stiffness (rigidity) often occurs in your limbs and neck. Sometimes the stiffness can be so severe that it limits the size of your movements and causes pain.

The signs and symptoms of withdrawal appear between six to 48 hours after the patient “stops” drinking alcohol. Some of the most common symptoms include tremors, mild headaches, cold sweat, vomiting, loss of appetite, insomnia, restlessness, rapid pulse, anxiety and auditory hallucinations.

However, some testing may be done to rule out other causes of tremors, such as excessive caffeine or tobacco use, alcohol withdrawal, use of certain medications (for example, asthma drugs, lithium, certain antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs)

Physiological Tremor: This is a very-low-amplitude fine tremor (between 6 Hz and 12 Hz) that is barely visible to the naked eye. It is present in every normal individual during maintaining a posture or movement. Neurologic examination results of patients with physiologic tremor are usually normal.
